Sunday Crew Jobs comprise the biggest segment of volunteer tasks at our Church. These Sunday morning jobs help make the worship services run smoothly. The Sunday Crew jobs are a good area to volunteer for many reasons:
- You meet people at Church quickly.
- It is an area that needs the greatest number of volunteers.
- Sunday Crew is time limited ... you don't have to commit to more than a Sunday or two.
You can sign up for Sunday Crew in two ways: 1) complete the Foundations of Fellowship form available on this website at http://www.uuc-urbana.org/FoundationsofFellowshipForm.htm, or 2) add your name to the Church’s CREW-L list by sending an email to Peggy Patten at: m-patten@sbcglobal.net. You will be notified of Sunday Crew vacancies approximately once per month.
Below are descriptions of the Sunday Crew jobs needed at the 9:00 and 11:00 worship services.
Ushers (arrive 15 minutes before the service begins)
Two Ushers stand at the doors leading into the sanctuary to hand out the Orders of Service as people enter the sanctuary before the service. The Ushers also pass the collection plate during the Offertory and take an approximate attendance. A separate card with “Usher Instructions” is provided by the Offertory plates with details about what to do with the collection after the service and how to record attendance.
Announcer (arrive 10 minutes before the service begins)
The Announcer reads the prepared announcements found in the Announcement basket at the start of each service. An “Announcer Script” is provided in the basket to remind the Announcer about general notes to make during announcements.
Welcomer (arrive 20 minutes before the service begins & remain 10 minutes after the service has begun)
Welcomers stand at the Welcome Table to welcome or greet visitors. Welcomers wear nametags and a “Welcomer” badge. The Welcome Table has clipboards with yellow visitor information cards and sticky nametags. Welcomers should introduce themselves to visitors, offer a nametag, and ask visitors to fill out the visitor information form. After the service Welcomers put all the yellow cards that have been filled out that day in the envelope for the Office Administrator by her office door or in her mailbox. Offer the RE, Church & Uniter materials in the brochure rack by the table as appropriate. “Good Morning”, “Hello” or “Welcome” are great ways to initiate communication. Other questions to ask include: “Are you visiting today?” “Would you fill out a visitor card for us?” “Can I get you a nametag?” “ What brought you to church?” “Do you have any questions?” Introduce the visitor to current church members who are passing by the Welcome Table and ask them to escort the visitors into the service. After the service has begun the Welcomer should stay by the Welcome Table to catch anyone who might have come late or anyone with additional questions.
Hospitality Provider (arrive 10 minutes before the service OR leave the worship service 5-10 minutes before the conclusion to set snacks out on the table in Fellowship Hall.)
Hospitality servers bring snacks to share after the service for all to enjoy at the "coffee hour." All supplies except the “goodies” are provided at the Church. Individuals may wish to bring a special snack to celebrate a birthday, an anniversary, or another celebration. Hospitality servers are responsible for cleaning up the treats they provide at the end of Hospitality. Our Kitchen Helper, Stephanie Cobb, cleans the cups used for the hot and cold beverages for Hospitality. Our Sexton, Mike Bee, prepares and cleans up the coffee and tea for each service.
Decorations Provider (arrive 30 minutes before the service begins)
Arrive 30 minutes before the service begins. The Decorations Provider provides an arrangement of flowers, pottery, photographs, baskets, sea shells, rocks, or other items for the decorations table in the Sanctuary, allowing space for the joys and concerns candles. If the Choir is rehearsing, please work silently in the Sanctuary when setting up the Decorations table. The decorations should be removed after the second service, particularly if live flowers or plants are used.
